Max Kahn, born April 22, 1857, in Mannheim, Germany, and passed away February 23, 1939, in Carpentras, France, was a prominent German portrait and genre painter based in Frankfurt am Main. Kahn spent his youth in Frankfurt, studying under Angilbert Goebel in 1881/82. He continued his studies in Munich from 1882 to 1885 under Karl Karger, and then at the Munich Academy under Nikolaus Gysis and Ludwig von Löfftz from 1884 to 1889. Kahn then moved to Paris, where he briefly studied at the Académie Julian under Tony Robert-Fleury until 1914. He traveled to Italy in 1893, Holland in 1897 and 1898, and spent several months each year on the island of Bréhat in Brittany. Kahn primarily painted genre scenes of rural life and portraits. Between 1890 and 1914, he regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon of the Société des Artistes Français, the 1902 exhibition in Versailles, and the 1898 international exhibition in Barcelona. He also exhibited multiple times at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and the Glaspalast in Munich from 1894 onwards.
